Love Goddess? Never Saw That Coming

One of the more notable things about the season finale of “Girls” on Sunday is that Hannah, the heroine played by Lena Dunham, kept her clothes on.
She didn’t play Ping-Pong in the nude, or go dancing in a mesh T-shirt with no bra underneath. For once Lena Dunham’s unflinching, even defiant flaunting of physical imperfection was not on full display.
This HBO series, created by Ms. Dunham, became a sensation almost overnight, mostly because it was such a refreshing breath of realism. “Girls” follows four young, privileged women who have narrow prospects, not much ambition, very little drive or determination, and terrible boyfriends. Unlike her friends Hannah doesn’t even have good looks or a flattering wardrobe; Ms. Dunham kept finding new ways to rub it in and make a virtue of it.
“Girls” was the millennials’ answer to “Sex and the City,” and the overexposure of Ms. Dunham’s physique became a driving force of conversation about the show, spawning a small but intense and even frenzied debate about feminism, Madison Avenue and body image. Some were shocked and a little repelled by her exhibitionism, but many took it as a cause: A television heroine can be frumpy and overweight and still have love affairs and lots of drama.
But there wasn’t much else to celebrate. Whether exploring unpaid internships, sex or cellulite, “Girls” is a comedy about love and friendship that is fearlessly dark, crude and unidealized.
Until Sunday night, that is. Ms. Dunham likes to tinker with her audience’s expectations, and this time she did it in reverse.
For the season finale she pulled the tablecloth out from under all that finely observed pessimism and authenticity and instead reached for a romance-novel finale. Three heroines fade out in happily-ever-after tableaus. Marnie (Allison Williams), having endured every imaginable romantic and professional comeuppance, reunites with her ex-boyfriend, who has now miraculously become wealthy and good in bed.
Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) breaks up with Ray (Alex Karpovsky), a loser with no joy or prospects, and she ends up at a bar kissing Ray’s worst nightmare, a tall, blond man in a suit who likes to laugh.
And Hannah, frozen under her covers with writer’s block and crescendoing, panic-induced O.C.D., is rescued by Adam (Adam Driver), who runs to Hannah through the streets of Brooklyn talking to her, iPhone to iPhone, through FaceTime. Hannah, even in this dreamy sequence, still looks like a slob. And there’s more: Adam was sleeping with someone else, a thinner, more conventionally pretty woman. (Turns out he didn’t enjoy the sex nearly as much.) ( From The New York Times )
