NBC bringing 'The Tonight Show' back to New York with Jimmy Fallon as host, sources say

There's no place like home.
NBC is planning to return “The Tonight Show” to New York City, where it began in 1954 when it was hosted by Steve Allen.
The show moved to Los Angeles in 1972, when Johnny Carson decided having the show in Hollywood would give him better access to movie star guests — and offer him a more relaxed lifestyle.
Work has already quietly begun on building a new studio at 30 Rockefeller Plaza for the show, which will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon, The New York Times first reported.
NBC officials confirmed that a new studio for Fallon is under construction. But network officials have vehemently denied Fallon, the host of “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” is in line to replace Jay Leno in the earlier time slot.
“It’s basically a done deal,” a network source told the Daily News. “It’s come down to a matter of when.”
The timing, according to another NBC insider, is likely to be some time in late 2014 — after Leno’s deal with the network expires that fall.
Plans for Fallon to inherit “Tonight” have long been in the works. But they seem to have accelerated in January when ABC moved “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” up against “The Tonight Show” and “Late Show With David Letterman.”
While Kimmel has not managed to beat Leno in the ratings, he has attracted a sizable chunk of the younger viewers coveted by advertisers.
Oddly, “The Tonight Show’s” strong ratings have become a headache for NBC, because they may give Leno more leverage to negotiate his exit than NBC brass would like. The show has remained on top since Leno took over in 1992.
But in recent days, Leno has blasted NBC’s low ratings in his monologues and irritated his boss, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, who has told him to stop.
Leno briefly stepped down from “Tonight” in 2009 when Conan O’Brien took over; O’Brien was pushed out eight months later. ( From Nydailynews )
